Chapter 15

Louise and Carlos had a great lunch with Jamal and Silas. Then the group broke up for Carlos to play powder-puff football with a bunch of guys at the park. Louise was never much for sports, but it was fun to watch Carlos from the sidelines. It gave Louise time to study his form without him seeing.

When they finally made it back to the estate, it was later that evening. Louise was nervous. She didn’t know where the night would go from here. She was tempted to invite him to her house for dinner, but she wasn’t ready for the pressure associated with him being in her home. Neither one of them made a move when she parked her car. She snuck a look at him, and his face was emotionless. She went to open her door.

“I had a great time today.” Louise said. She opened her car door. He seemed to shake himself and smiled at her. It was her smile, genuine and sweet.

“Thank you for taking the day off for me.” He held her hand. She stared at their hands.

“Thank you for inviting me.” They held hands for a while. She let go of the door and it closed back. The overhead light eventually went out. She gazed into his eyes then, the shadows giving her courage. He leaned to her, only stopping when their foreheads met. All she had to do was bring her chin up a little.

Her neck wouldn’t move. Her fear, the one that fought his flirtations all day, wouldn’t let her move to bring them closer. She knew that if she kissed him, if she did more with him, she would cross a line she can’t come back from. Right now, in this moment, she convinced herself that she could still let him go. She breathed in and brought her head back, letting go of his hand. They both got out of the car.

“Same time tomorrow?” he asked.

“You will be sore tomorrow, so sleep in,” she said, smiling at him.

“Louise, I’m still in my prime. I won’t be sore. That is, after I soak in some Epson salt.” She had to hold on to the car from the vision of him soaking in a tub.

“Are you ok?” He came to her and held her wrist.

“I’m tired. After walking up and down the town a million times.” She hoped her smile distracted him from her flushed face.

He walked her to the front door. “I’ll see you in the morning, then.”

“It will be later, like 8 again. And tomorrow I need to get some work done. So, no distractions from you.” She pointed at him. He held her finger and kissed it.

“No promises.” He said. Then he was walking back to the estate.
